How do students use Sumdog?

This page provides an overview of what students will experience when first getting started with Sumdog

Key things to know about Sumdog:

  1. The Warm-Up
  2. The Student Dashboard
  3. Games

1. The Warm-Up

When a student logs in to Sumdog on an app, they'll be taken straight to their dashboard. However, if they're logging in on a browser, they'll first be taken to the warm-up pictured below.

The warm-up is designed to get students used to answering questions while Sumdog is loading in the background. Once Sumdog has loaded, the warm-up will end, and the student can click 'play' to proceed to the Student Dashboard.

You can read more about the warm-up here.

2. The Student Dashboard

After the warm-up, students will be taken to their Student Dashboard, pictured below:

The Diagnostic:

The middle of the screen will always show the current task students are working on. If it's the first time they've logged in, they'll see the diagnostic. The Diagnostic determines the difficulty level of the questions the student will be asked in games and is not game-based itself.

For more information on the Diagnostic, click here.

Tasks:

Once the diagnostic is completed, students can start doing tasks. When they choose a task, it will appear in the middle of their dashboard. This could either be skills chosen by Sumdog and adapted to each child's level OR it could be a task set by a teacher.

Work set by the teacher will appear on the Student Dashboard by default, but students can also select tasks themselves.

All tasks can be found in the Task List, pictured below:

To work on skills chosen by Sumdog, choose the task called Math Training.

To choose a task set by a teacher, look for it in the Task List and click on it. It will now appear in the middle of the dashboard. You can identify set tasks, as they will have been given a specific name by the teacher who set it.

You can read more about choosing tasks in our Tasks Guide here.

3. Games

Children can choose any of their favorite games to answer questions in tasks. They can play games in the following types of tasks:

  • Math/Spelling/Grammar Training
  • Multiplication/Addition/Subtraction/Division Practice
  • Challenges
  • Competitions
  • Contests

Students will not be able to choose games for the diagnostic or for assessments set by the teacher.

To choose a game, click on the green 'Start' button on the Student Dashboard. This will take the student to the game selector page, where they can choose which game to play:

Students will be asked questions adapted to their level in whichever game they select.
