Anti-Rush System: How Sumdog discourages rushing questions in games

Discover how Sumdog’s Anti-Rush System benefits teachers and students by encouraging concentration over rushed answers. This articles explains how the feature works, what students see, and how you can turn it off based on individual needs.

Please note: this option is enabled only for accounts associated with a school subscription

What is the Anti-Rush system?

The Anti-Rush System is designed to help children who rush their answers to
change their habits. When we detect that they're hurrying through questions to play games, and potentially not concentrating, they'll see warnings that tell them to slow down or they'll lose access to gameplay.

If they continue to rush through questions and answer incorrectly after the warnings, then they'll temporarily be removed from gameplay until they start focusing on answering the questions correctly. It's all about getting students to slow down and think about their answers.

It will apply to maths and grammar games, but not spelling or typed answers as we do not have a way to detect lack of focus in those question types.

The Anti-Rush feature is automatically activated for students aged 8 and above (based on the year group or grade they are registered under on Sumdog). Instructions for enabling or disabling it for individual students can be found at the end of this article.

Please note, this feature is only available on v88 of the app.

What do students see?

If students rush and get incorrect answers several times in a row they will see the below screen.

If they get the above screen regularly and have a low accuracy, they'll get this warning screen at the end of the game.

If they continue to rush, they'll see a message that they are entering a no-gameplay mode.

They will need to answer a certain number of questions carefully, without games (see image below), before being able to take part in their chosen game again.

Students will see their Anti-Rush status on their screen. The first icon below indicates they are at risk of entering a no-gameplay mode if they don't concentrate. The second icon shows that they have been removed from games temporarily.

How can I disable this feature for students?

We know that being taken out of gameplay might not be the best fit for everyone. It's set to be on for all students by default, but you can switch it off for specific students if needed.

The overall goal is to help students break the habit of quickly clicking through questions to get to the game by encouraging them to focus on their answers. We'd love to hear your feedback - contact us to let us know what you think!
